about

"Oneirophrenia is a hallucinatory, dream-like state caused by several conditions such as prolonged sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation, or drugs (such as ibogaine). From the Greek words "ὄνειρο" (oneiro, "dream") and "φρενός" (phrenos, "mind")."

Composed/compiled/sewn together from bits and bobs of audio that have been gathering digital dust on my hard-drives for far too long, Oneirophrenia is the culmination of nearly three years' worth of work to cobble together a full album of original tracks exploring one of my favourite sources of inspiration: altered states of consciousness.

Here you'll find musical molecules to unlock strange mental journeys into the liminal realm of brain-states where dreams, near-death experiences, hallucinogenic trips, and psychotic breaks all blur together into painful revelations and revelatory agonies. Here are the shades of Lord Dunsany and H. P. Lovecraft drinking ayahuasca with Terence McKenna and Carl Jung on the banks of the River Yann. Here are inquisitive zoogs and mindless gods of infinite fecundity; choirs of Machine Elves stitching together timelines as quantum events trigger multiversal expansions; wisdom gained through blood-soaked madness; and the awful blessing of the drill-toothed Buddhas whose trephinations free the self from the holocaust of "the real."

Oneirophrenia is also my tribute to the music that first got me interested in making music of my own: the seminal sounds of late-1980s/early-1990s industrial. Fellow pre-Millennial rivetheads and synth nerds will recognize signature elements of such pioneering acts as Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Xorcist, and Mentallo & The Fixer--all processed into new and even weirder shapes thanks to today's incredibly powerful audio software!

Special thanks are also due to: Max Gonano (retired), Greg Davis, and Drs. Marty Sharer and Yugo Ikach of the California University of Pennsylvania Department of Music, for all the instruction and encouragement I've received over the past three years as a Commercial Music Technology major; Greta Schottman and Jan Fung, my string and percussion teachers, for challenging me to keep going even as arthritis and fibromyalgia have rendered me unable to play anything but a MIDI controller; my CMT homeboys Josh Howell, Jonny Red, Matt Poirier, Brian Smith, and Derek Bendel for showing me how to do all sorts of cool shit and just generally being friends; and, of course, my *real* family, Joe-E Kendall, Hubba, and Mikey, just 'cause.

A moment of silence for a lost friend: Davin James Anderson (1974-2013). The entire Werewolves of Uniontown crew miss you, brother.

And finally, props are due to the musical idols whose inspiration first set me on the path to Oneirophrenia: Gary Numan; Nivek Ogre, cEvin Key, Dwayne Goettel (RIP), Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, and Mark Walk; Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber; and Bat. And to the modern synth gurus Otto von Schirach, Brian Wayne Transeau (BT), Gautier Serre (Igorrr), and Guillaume "Spiky" Muller for breaking new ground. Props also to Caitlin R. Kiernan, for chapter 7 of The Drowning Girl (a HUGE influence on the track "Oneirophrenia," and Thomas Ligotti, for "Dr. Locrian's Asylum." There. That oughta do it.

TECHNICAL APPENDIX: Oneirophrenia was composed entirely in Renoise 2.x, using Native Instruments' Kontakt and Absynth (versions 4 and 5), CamelAudio CamelPhat and CamelSpace; and mastered in Cakewalk Sonar X2 with Izotope Ozone 5. This is the last 100% electronic album I ever plan on making, but I guaran-damn-tee that I will be using all of the above products until the day that either the Old Ones return to Earth or the robots destroy humanity, whichever comes first.

about

Derek C. F. Pegritz German, Pennsylvania

Derek C. F. Pegritz is not a band. He is barely even a person. He makes "music" by stitching millions upon millions of 1s and 0s together by hand using a patented process involving lots of really, really tiny wires.
